Toners: skip them, splash them, or reach for an essence?

Toners: skip them, splash them, or reach for an essence?

Toner is one of the most confusing steps in skincare, partly because the word covers very different products. The astringent toners of decades past were mostly alcohol and stripped the skin. Today the category is broad, and whether you need one depends entirely on what kind you mean.

The old kind, and why to skip it

Tightening toners full of alcohol or witch hazel promise to shrink pores and degrease the skin. What they actually do is strip oil so aggressively that skin often overproduces more. Unless a dermatologist suggested one, you can leave these on the shelf.

Hydrating toners and essences

The newer products are gentle, water-light layers meant to add hydration and prep skin for what follows. They are optional, not essential, but some people like the extra moisture step.

  • Hydrating toner: a thin layer of humectants, pressed in with the hands.
  • Essence: similar idea, often a little richer, popular in Korean routines.

Do you actually need one?

If your moisturizer keeps you comfortable, you can skip toner entirely with no downside. If your skin drinks up hydration and still feels tight, a hydrating toner is a low-risk addition. Treat it as a bonus, never a requirement.

The honest answer is that toner is the most skippable step in skincare. Use one because you enjoy it, not because a routine chart told you to.
