Scalp care: the foundation most people skip

Scalp care: the foundation most people skip

Hair routines tend to focus on the lengths, the ends, the shine. But hair grows out of skin, and a neglected scalp shows up as flaking, itchiness, slow growth, and roots that turn greasy fast. Treating the scalp like skin changes the whole picture.

The scalp is skin too

It has oil glands, a barrier, and a microbiome, and it responds to buildup and irritation the same way your face does. Product residue, dry shampoo, and sweat collect at the roots and clog things up if they are never properly cleared.

  • Exfoliate occasionally: a gentle scalp scrub or a clarifying wash every week or two lifts buildup.
  • Massage: a few minutes of fingertip massage while washing boosts circulation and feels good.
  • Do not over-wash: stripping the scalp daily can trigger more oil, the same loop as oily facial skin.

Match the wash to your scalp

An oily scalp wants more frequent, lighter cleansing; a dry, flaky one wants gentler, less frequent washing and maybe a soothing oil treatment. There is no universal schedule, only what keeps your scalp comfortable.

When flaking persists

Stubborn flaking that does not respond to gentler care may be seborrheic dermatitis rather than ordinary dryness, and that needs a targeted treatment. If it itches and returns no matter what, it is worth checking.

Treat the scalp first, and the hair growing from it has a far better starting point.
