Retinol has the evidence to back its reputation: it speeds cell turnover, smooths texture, and softens fine lines over months of steady use. It also has a reputation for redness and flaking, and almost all of that comes from people using too much, too soon.
Start low and slow
Begin with a low strength, around 0.2 to 0.3 percent, and use it twice a week for the first two weeks. If your skin stays calm, move to every other night. There is no prize for rushing, and the irritation that comes from overuse can set you back further than going slowly ever would.
- Amount: a pea-sized dot for the whole face is enough.
- Timing: nighttime only, since retinol breaks down in sunlight.
The sandwich trick
If your skin runs dry or sensitive, apply moisturizer, then retinol, then a little more moisturizer. Buffering the retinol this way reduces irritation while still letting it work. You lose almost no benefit and gain a lot of comfort.
Sunscreen is non-negotiable
Retinol makes skin more sun-sensitive, so daily SPF stops you from undoing the progress overnight. Skipping it is the fastest way to trade one problem for another.
Expect a short adjustment period where skin looks a little dull or flaky. That settles. The people who see the best results are simply the ones who stayed consistent for three months instead of quitting at week two.
