Pore size is mostly decided by genetics, oil production, and age, and no product shrinks a pore the way the ads suggest. That said, you can make pores look smaller and stop them from appearing more obvious than they need to. The honesty starts with letting go of the word shrink.
Why they look bigger
Pores stretch when they fill with oil and debris, and the surrounding skin loses firmness over time. Anything that keeps pores clear and skin firm will make them less noticeable, even though the pore itself has not changed size permanently.
- Salicylic acid: clears the oil and dead cells that stretch pores out.
- Retinoids: improve firmness over months, which tightens the look of the surface.
- Niacinamide: helps regulate oil and refine appearance with steady use.
What does not work
Cold water, pore strips, and astringent toners offer at most a brief, temporary effect. Pore strips pull out surface plugs but do nothing lasting, and harsh toners can irritate skin into looking worse.
Makeup that does not settle in
A smoothing primer fills the surface visually, but a heavy, oil-based foundation can pool and emphasize pores. Lighter, well-set bases look cleaner through the day.
Keep pores clear, support firmness, and skip the gimmicks. That is the realistic version of refined skin.
