Curly hair: the basics of a good wash day

Curly and wavy hair behaves nothing like straight hair, and the standard routine of lather, rinse, brush, and blow-dry is exactly what leaves curls frizzy and undefined. A wash day built around moisture and minimal disruption brings out the pattern that is already there.

Cleanse gently

Curly hair tends to be drier because oil travels down the strand slowly. Harsh, stripping shampoos make that worse. Many curly routines use a gentle, low-lather cleanser or a cleansing conditioner to keep moisture in.

  • Condition generously: detangle with fingers or a wide-tooth comb while conditioner is in.
  • Style on soaking-wet hair: apply curl cream or gel to drenched hair to lock in shape.
  • Scrunch, don't rub: use a microfiber towel or cotton shirt to gently squeeze out water.

Let it set

Avoid touching curls while they dry, which is what breaks up the clump and creates frizz. Air-dry or use a diffuser on low. Once fully dry, scrunch out any crunchy gel cast for soft, defined curls.

Protect them overnight

A satin pillowcase or a loose pineapple on top of the head keeps curls from flattening and frizzing while you sleep.

Moisture, a gentle hand, and leaving the curls alone as they dry. Those three habits do more than any single product.
