Fresh color fades faster than anyone wants, turning brassy, dull, or washed out within weeks. Most of that fading is avoidable, and the culprits are usually heat, sun, and the wrong wash routine rather than the dye itself.
Wash less, wash cooler
Every wash pulls a little color out, and hot water opens the cuticle to let more escape. Stretching time between washes and rinsing in cool water keeps tone truer for longer.
- Color-safe shampoo: sulfate-free formulas are gentler on the dye.
- Toning products: a purple shampoo neutralizes brassiness on blonde and lightened hair.
- UV and heat: sun and hot tools both accelerate fading, so protect against both.
The first 48 hours
Color needs time to settle after a salon visit. Waiting a couple of days before the first wash lets the cuticle close around the pigment, which holds the tone better from the start.
Mind the chlorine
Pool chemicals can shift color, especially on blonde hair, sometimes toward green. Wetting hair with clean water before swimming and rinsing right after limits how much gets absorbed.
Cooler, less frequent washing, the right products, and protection from sun and heat keep salon color looking fresh weeks longer than neglect allows.
