Even a good routine leaves residue over time. Styling products, dry shampoo, hard water minerals, and conditioner all build up on the hair and scalp, and your regular shampoo is not designed to strip it. That is what a clarifying shampoo is for.
Signs you have buildup
Hair that looks dull no matter what you do, feels coated or waxy, goes limp, or stops responding to products usually has buildup. Conditioner that suddenly seems to do nothing is another tell.
- Product residue: from gels, sprays, oils, and especially dry shampoo.
- Mineral deposits: from hard water, which leaves hair stiff and rough.
Use it sparingly
Clarifying shampoo is strong by design, so it can over-dry if used too often. Once every couple of weeks is enough for most people, more only if you use heavy products or have very hard water. Always follow with a good conditioner or mask, since clarifying strips the good oils along with the buildup.
Not for daily use
Reaching for it every wash defeats the purpose and leaves hair parched. Think of it as a periodic reset that makes your normal products work properly again.
When hair stops responding, a single clarifying wash often brings it back to life faster than buying yet another product.
